Woke early and, despite trying to prepare everything last night, took ages to eat breakfast and get on the road. The weather forecast for the afternoon was shocking, so we only had a short window to try and get up Ben Venue.

The lower sections of the walk along the raging river and through the woods, is wide and well signed. Higher up the layer of snow got deeper, but loose powder easy to walk on, so we left the crampons in our rucksacks.

Reaching the plateau below the summit the snow was knee deep, and hidden beneath were streams and bogs. The path lost beneath deep drifts. We decided not to follow the trail of footprints heading straight for the summit, and as the cloud and rain closed in turned around. It was disappointing not to reach the top. But we had a good romp in deep snow and got down for lunch in the dry.
