Sinnington, Yorkshire, England

August Bank Holiday staycation in Sinnington where we had planned to hike and cycle. On our arrival on Friday we were greeted with heavy rain but we got set up in record time. We spent the late afternoon planning our next adventures.

Saturday saw plans for a 20km hike from our base at cliff farm caravan park up to the site of Cawthorne Roman Camps. Completing our circular route we came back through the lovely villages of Cropton and Sinnington (both with pretty churches). We also had some stunning countryside views and wooded paths.

Adrian made a good call whilst on our way back to not attempt to cross the river at the ford which was just as well when we arrived at the river side it was raging!!

Sunday, we decided was a bike day. We had planned to cycle the Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough. We drove Herdy to Whitby parking at the Abbey and cycled out from there. Parts of the track were poor – stoney, silty and muddy. Despite that, we had great views of the coastline and cycled as far as Ravenscar, where we stopped for coffee and snack break. We followed the same route back to Herdy at the abbey.

After a quick change out of cycling gear, we headed into Whitby, via the 199 steps. We enjoyed coffee on the harbour front and wandered around, despite the really busy crowds. Back up the 199 steps to Herdy and took the scenic route back via the coast and Scarborough.

Once back at Cliff Farm, we cooked dinner on the Cadac enjoying the late evening sunshine.

Bank holiday Monday brought beautiful sunshine so we breakfasted outside before packing up and heading off to Kirkham en route home.

We’d planned a walk once we got to Kirkham Priory which turned out to be delightful. It had forest paths (quiet and great for practicing shinrin yoku – forest bathing), riverside paths and treks through open fields. The weir outside the priory was really racing as we got back to Herdy. And unfortunately time to head off home.
