We arrived at Castlerigg Hall site in Keswick on Friday evening just as dusk was settling. The setting sun made for some stunning views from Herdy’s pitch We set up the illuminated box too with the site name on it (an idea inspired by Maurice_the motorhome). We set about cooking and planning our activities for the weekend.

Saturday’s weather was forecast to be really bad but given that the morning wasn’t too wet we decided to set out for a little trek up to Castlehead Crag and remarkably, we actually got some lovely views given the rain!! There’s a great trig point on the summit cataloguing all the fells in view. We continued down to the Lakeside, near Friars Crag, and then through Keswick town to find a path back to the site. Back to Herdy for lunch and snuggled up for the afternoon with the rugby!
Planning for Sunday was done over breakfast once we had seen the glorious weather. We planned to leave Herdy at the site and hike to the end of the road and then take the way-marked path on the right straight onto the fellside up to Walla Crag. We haven’t been up Walla Crag on this route before, having always done it before from Ashness Bridge. The route was an easy run up to the summit with some superb views over Derwentwater and all the surrounding fells, making for some fantastic photo opportunities!!
From the summit of Walla Crag we followed the ridge across and up to Bleaberry Fell, which given the rain on Saturday, was a tad wet and the path was a bit like a stream in places!! The views from our second summit were fabulous and we were happy to pose in front of my favourite mountain, Blencathra.

Rather than going further along the wet ridge, we headed down the fell towards Ashness Bridge, stopping off at mum and dad’s rock. We had lunch sitting on the rocks by the bridge before heading back towards the site through the pretty Great Wood.
The site at Castlerigg Hall is an absolute gem and we will definitely be back for future visits The setting and the views are stunning, the staff are lovely and friendly, and they found us a space to leave Herdy whilst we off for the hike before we headed home in the late afternoon. They were also super impressed with Herdy and her name!!
