Trip to Borrowdale, The Lake District

A last minute decision to take a long weekend trip up to the Lakes. We set off on a very wet Thursday and pitched up on a lovely spot on the Borrowdale CMC site in Grange. Herdy was parked in the trees about 50 metres away from the gate out onto the lake side path

Given the torrential rain we decided against an evening trek and settled down to watch the Giro d’Italia highlights.

Fridays forecast was showery and overcast so we made the decision to stay low and had planned an anti clockwise route around Derwentwater. The scenery around the lake is varied and even from here the mountains look spectacular.

On route through Keswick we actually glimpsed a tiny bit of blue sky and we continued out towards Portinscale. Just the other side of the marina we detoured to Lingholme Gardens – a walled garden with a great cafe and outdoor seating area, where we had some excellent lunch!

The route back to the site then took us through Brandelhow Woods which are beautiful and the route right on the lake shore is absolutely stunning

Saturday was much more promising in terms of the weather. We had a couple of hikes planned and not being able to decide which to do we joined them both together!!! So we headed out towards Ashness Bridge along the lake shore and from there up to Watendlath, where we had our first of two stops – this one for cake!!

From Watendlath we followed the bridle way over Resting Stone down into Rosthwaite where we stopped for lunch at the Flock In Tea Room. From there we began our ascent of High Spy from the back going up through the old slate quarry – a new route for both of us and a great place to practice the odd yoga pose!!

This route brought us out at Dale Head Tarn and from there we made the final push up to the summit of High Spy. The view from here is superb.

From here we followed the ridge across to Maiden Moor and then onto Catbells before returning to the Hause and descending to the road by the campsite, back in time for hot chocolate!!
